Depends on where you live. On the west coast, things seem to be trending towards loostening up on them. California, and Washington went to a rolling 25 year window. In other Words, current, to 25 years old, test. Older than that, no test. Nevada, makes us test everything older than two years, but, offers a loophole by allowing a restricted plate. "classic car" is the plate, and you smog it the first time, to a much looser set of standards, then is limited on the amount of miles you drive per year. But, prior to that we used another loophole called a waiver, which gave a couple of hoops to jump through, but, a gear head would not have a problem. In other Words, depending on your state, there is probably a "hidden" loophole that you may have to dig a little bit to find, but, a motivated individual should find success. Remember, there are exceptions due to individual needs, and, a state would be harsh to cause a person financial devastation by not allowing a loophole for DMV to use. Most DMV sites have an emisions lab connected to them. These people are not paper pushers, but kind of mechanics. A non smog issue usually goes to them, so, they know which forms to fill out, and which hoops to jump through. Remember. They do not wnt anyone to circumvent the system, but, want to help working people to be able to get to work. So, going up to this guy and spouting off about your big block camaro, with a roller cam in it, probably would not be the approach, I would use. I find with DMV stupid, broke, and in need of a solution to license some old camaro that you spend your only $1500 on to get to work at the job you are about to lose if you can't get there.............Chuck.
