What is the proper procedure to change the water supply tube in a 1984 55hp Evinrude outboard?

The water tube on this engine is flared on one end, and it installs from the top of the adapter plate, located under the powerhead. The powerhead and adapter plate will both have to be removed to replace it. Removal of the gearcase will make the job a little easier on reassembly. Once the adapter plate has been removed, the replacement proceedure will become apparent. This can turn into quite a job if you are working on a unit used in salt water.
