What is the definition of group counseling?

A therapist/counselor may have some expertise in a given area and decide to offer group counseling/therapy to address this area. Anger Management is an issue frequently addressed in group format. The counselor sets various limits and discusses guidelines/rules at the outset. Members (screened ahead of time and voluntarily taking part) will usually be free to participate or not in the sessions; participation involves some degree of self-disclosure regarding the group's purpose, or feedback offered to another member. There are different approaches to group work, but a good therapist/facilitator will be able to bring various patterns of behavior and group interactions to light and use these patterns and behaviors to deepen the insights and modify the motivations of the members to their benefit.
