The Dunkleosteus, a prehistoric armored fish from the late Devonian period, is estimated to have been capable of swimming at speeds of around 2 to 4 miles per hour (3 to 6 kilometers per hour). While not the fastest swimmer in the ocean, its powerful jaws and formidable size made it an apex predator of its time. Its speed was likely sufficient for ambushing prey rather than sustained high-speed pursuits.
