If you fall off a small boat how should you be pulled back onto the boat?

if someone has a piece of rope they coulde pull you in but if your alone then you could pull yourself in but then again if you had a small canoe then it would just tip over which then leads to the fact of why you would be in a canoe on your own just try to figure out a way by your self.
