What type of revolver was most used in the American Civil War?

A number of manufacturers like Colt and Remington made revolvers. They were front loading, single action types, with a separate primer for each cylinder. The self-contained cartridge, in use in the Sharps carbine, the Spencer, and the Henry rifles, did not see widespread use in revolvers until after the war.
