When asked 'Briefly describe your relationship with this person' on a job application, the employer simply wants a context of either job related or personal relationship. Let's say you give:

  • Your Neighbor - write next to name, Personal Contact
  • Your Great Aunt Mary - write next to name, Personal Contact
  • Your Landlord - write next to name, Personal / Business Contact
  • Your Current Supervisor - write next to name, Current Employment
  • Your ex-Boss, ex-Supervisor - write next to name, Last Employer
  • A Business Person or other professional you've known in the community - write next to name, Business Community

Always use the full name of the person.

Always write formally - not My Auntie, or my uncle's step son by his 3rd marriage.

Always give a contact telephone number for each reference.

If asked, put how many years you have known the person... a rough estimate.
