Bess and the Highway Man now have no obstacles before them to meet together as they please in the dead of night. The light of Bess waiting for the arrival of her lover in her upstairs room can still be seen through the window during late night hours. And the Tiot..Tiot..Tiot sound of horse-hoofs of the coming Highway Man resounding in the night can still be heard there during nights. It is not that they are not permitted, forbidden or simply cannot meet during day, but ghosts are used to meet during inky black nights. The inn is now a haunt of moaning jackals and hooting owls as is reported by the occasional passersby. It is said that the area is more and more becoming like the dreaded valley of the Count in Transylvania. Alfred Noyce, while ending this famous poem has given enough hints to guess the future activities of his famous dead characters.
