In the United States, the Post Office provides door-to-door delivery service for most non-dangerous items - this was basically the forerunner to companies like FedEx and UPS. Originally the Post Office handled personal letters, but this has dropped off significantly since email became widely used.
Other services include collecting money for and cashing out money orders (basically certified checks), selling collectible stamps and packing material and providing passport and visa services.
