Explain why lunar eclipses occur during a full moon?

A lunar eclipse can only occur during a full moon because the lunar eclipse causes the Moon to pass directly behind the Earth and into its shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely with the Earth in the middle.
