An ermine, which is a seasonally white-coated form of the short-tailed weasel, typically gives birth to a litter of 4 to 6 kits, although litters can range from 1 to 8. The breeding season occurs in late winter to early spring, and the kits are born after a gestation period of about 250 days, primarily due to delayed implantation. The young are weaned after about 6 to 8 weeks and start to become independent shortly thereafter.
