According to Mr. Franchise of Franchise Foundations, Ray Kroc, a multimixer salesman, visited the McDonalds brothers location in San Bernardino, California in 1954 to see why a single, small hamburger stand needed the capacity to make 40 milkshakes at a time. Kroc immediately realized the potential for Franchising McDonalds. The McDonald brothers did not share his franchise vision, so Kroc was charged with franchise responsibilities. Kroc refined and standardized the business model, opening the first refined McDonalds prototype restaurant in Illinois in 1955.
