How is a pond made?

So much rain collects in an area to the point where it no longer drains. The water begins to build up, creating a puddle, then eventually a pond, and maybe even a lake at a later point. Or a spring in the ground can keep pumping water, thus creating a pond and later, a lake and possibly a creek.
