Choose something that:
-- You know you'll feel good about accomplishing.
-- You are Ready to do (if you're not really ready to lose those annoying 20 lbs, I'd suggest you wait until you're completely ready to). Success in resolutions is very reinforcing; failure can be undermining.
-- You'll get help and support from friends and loved ones in doing.
-- Keeps the goals modest at first.
-- You can clearly identify as being accomplished (e.g., "becoming a better person" is a nightmare as there's no way to tell if you're done; losing an inch at the waist is easily measured and you KNOW when you're done). Good luck and Happy New Year! :}
