Yes it is true that is what the statue shows. Today you can view it in St. Peter's in Rome. It is a wonderful piece of work. The way he uses the various veins in the marble makes it seem as the body of Jesus is hurt. The marble doesn't seem like stone because the movement of the clothing seems to fold and move. You can see the muscles under the flesh. I have seen it twice and I was very lucky the first time to see it firsthand and to be able to touch it, but today it is behind protective glass. A man in the 80's took a hammer to it so it is now safe from people.
