Hair powder was originally used as a degreaser. The ingredients included corn flour, wheat flour or talc. Powder was applied with a bellows (the powderee being covered with a cone-shape face mask and fabric smock), with a puff for touchups and a knife for removal. This was a fair amount of trouble, so the most wealthy men started wearing white wigs.
