Reinventing a brand is necessary when either (1) the target market is no longer appropriate, or (2) the brand is dead or dying, i.e., it's lost relevance among the target market. For example, PepsiCo successfully reinvented (i.e., repositioned) its Mountain Dew brand, taking it from "Hillbilly Juice" to a hip, extreme brand.
