Early pioneers in providing health care, such as Florence Nightingale, fostered professionalism in nursing. Ms Nightingale advocated hygiene, started the first nursing school (St, Thomas Hospital in London) and increased the use of statistics in determining the best of care. The University of Glasgow in 1703 graduated the first medical doctor. Before that, the practice of medicine was by practice and was limited to the upper classes. There was limited literature available for study. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor in the US - she graduated from Boston University in 1864. All in all, health care careers have been a product of the last two hundred years.
