The quagga, a subspecies of the plains zebra, was first scientifically described by the Dutch zoologist and explorer Willem John Burchell in 1824. The quagga was native to South Africa, where it was hunted to extinction in the late 19th century. The last known quagga died in captivity in 1883. It is often remembered for its unique appearance, featuring stripes only on the front part of its body.
