Also consider: Typically, medical expenses are called "back page" items, and are not always considered when a lender is making a decision. LOTS of people have medical bills on their credit history, and lots of creditors understand this - especially because medical expenses are typically high, and the need for medical help doesn't care what your wallet or insurance looks like.
In your case, it's much more likely that insufficient credit history is the culprit.
Regardless, it would probably be in your best interest to find the original creditor and pay the bill, even if you have to make payments.
