How cold does it have to be for water moccasins to hibernate?

Water moccasins, or cottonmouths, typically begin to hibernate when temperatures drop consistently below 50°F (10°C). As cold-blooded reptiles, they are sensitive to temperature changes and may seek shelter in dens or under debris to escape the cold. Hibernation usually occurs during the winter months until temperatures rise again in spring.
