What is the effect of personification in poems?

Personification is when a poet writes that an object or anything else that is not a human being is doing something only humans are able to do. Example: The stars danced across the sky; the wind spoke to me; the walls whispered.

I find personification fairly easy to confuse with metaphor in some cases, so you must be careful.
