How does a computer know when it needs a Microsoft update?

A computer knows it needs a Microsoft update after it checks back with Microsoft during scheduled automatic updates or after a user manually enters Windows Update. If no updates are available, then nothing will happen, but if updates are available, users will often be given the choice of downloading and install a given update or ignoring it.
