Male western painted turtles typically reach a carapace (shell) length of about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm). They are generally smaller than females, which can grow to be 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) long. Males are also characterized by their narrower shells and longer front claws, which they use during mating displays.
