American Literature really came into its own after WWI. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, and O'Neill dominated the period, and other authors joined them after WWII. Miller and Williams dominated the drama, along with revivals of O'Neill. African American authors such as Baldwin and Wright brought race to the front of the national conscience and consciousness, opening the door for Feminist writers in the '70s.
