General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia at Appamatox Court House, VA. That was supposed to end the Civil War but some armies continued to fight.

(BTW, that was the official name of the town. In this area of Virginia at that time, there were many towns that included "court house" in its name.)

General J.E. Johnston's army surrendered later on April 26, 1865 at Greensboro, NC.

Johnston surrendered near Durham,at the Bennett Place home, near the scene of his last battle against Sherman. The troops mustered out near Archdale, NC, about 20 miles from Greensboro.
