Okay, that's one way of looking at it. Another is that France beat Britain and the colonists were supplied with most of their firearms from France. France sent over thousands of soldiers. The French navy entrapped Cornwallis. Prussia was annoyed at England for breaking its alliance and created a neutrality league where a number of English allies did not join the war effort. France had Spain and the Dutch helping them, so England was fighting for its very survival. France bankrupted their own government doing this (as seen in the French Revolution). England did not have enough resources to protect the 13 colonies and was more interested in preserving other parts of the empire; one of the Sugar islands in the carribean generated more revenue than all of the colonies combined. So, basically, the British had nothing to use and nobody to rely on. Also, when you push people at the playground, people are eventually going to start pushing back. "Taxation without representation" and all that?
