When WWII ended in 1945, France attempted a return to Indo-chino and by 1946, the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh were engaged in combat with the French military forces. When the war ended (French Indo-China War) in 1954 (nine years after WWII ended), the country was divided in half. Ho Chi Minh was the leader in the newly declared COMMUNIST north, and a free world leader was to be elected for the new FREE WORLD south, under the guidance of the United States.
