You can try a free FTP program, but typically you'll need to know HTML and other code to be able to edit files.

Blogs (Blogger, Wordpress, etc.) enable you to log in and create or modify content using a browser, without a need to purchase any software. Designers of the themes and plugins you might decide to use may request donations for their products, but it's up to you if and how much you donate. There may be a learning curve involved, but once you get a hang of it, this could be a relatively easy and inexpensive way to maintain your online presence.
