WWII was never called the Great War. That was ther early name for WWI. The Second World War, for example, or W-W-I-I. The Russians also called it the Great Patriotic War. The "Great War," and "The War to End All War," were not titles attached to the Second World War. Both of these were used to denote the First World War. Hope this helps.
