How do mammals digest food?

Mammals digest food in several stages. It starts in the mouth with the release of salivary amylase. Food then passes to the stomach. However, there are several different mechanisms for digestion at this point, depending upon the species. Some animals use acid and enzymes released from other organs, while others use bacterial fermentation.
