The major sources of natural rubber were in areas of Asia either occupied by Japan or in areas close to the conflict (Indonesia, Malaya, Singapore). The sources in Africa required a long transport chain out of the continent and across the ocean. So synthetic rubber (neoprene) was produced to fill the great demand for wartime uses.
