The biggest problem facing the new country, particularly the United States after gaining independence, was establishing a stable and effective government. The Articles of Confederation proved insufficient, leading to issues of federal authority, economic instability, and interstate conflicts. Additionally, there were deep divisions over representation, slavery, and the balance of power between states and the federal government. These challenges ultimately necessitated the drafting of the Constitution in 1787 to create a more robust governmental framework.
