What did Amelia Earhart do that made her famous?

She was one of the best-known women pilots, at a time when flying was still relatively knew (in the 1920s and 1930s). She became famous for flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean-- the first woman to ever accomplish this. She also set many records for flight, and proved to a skeptical world that women were capable aviators.
