A fellow named Richard Owen called them that. It means "terrible lizards." It wasn't a particularly good name, because dinosaurs are not very much likle modern lizards; in fact, they're rather more like birds.
Funny thing is, when many of the simple folk of the country saw dinosaur remains, they saw the resemblance to the bones of chickens, but the educated people ridiculed this idea ("Giant chickens, indeed!"). Turns out the simple people were closer to right.
