There are three basic types of kitchen sink materials -- (1) stainless steel, (2) enameled cast iron, and (3) solid surface.

  • Stainless steel sinks are the most popular because they are easy to clean and heat resistant. Stainless steel is an alloy and derives it's stainless quality from both chromium and nickel. However, stainless steel are sometimes prone to scratches and dents.
  • Enameled cast iron sinks have a thin layer of enamel (a material derived from glass) fused to a cast-iron surface. While relatively cheap, they tend to chip and stain easily.
  • Solid surface sinks are made from acrylic resins and a mixture of mineral materials. They are relatively easy to clean but are prone to heat fractures.
