Christopher Columbus embarked on his first voyage in 1492, sailing west from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean. He initially set out to find a shortcut to Asia but instead reached the Bahamas, landing on an island he named San Salvador. Following this, he explored parts of Cuba and Hispaniola before returning to Spain. His route marked the beginning of European exploration and colonization of the Americas.
