Have a 1996 ski-doo formula sl 500 it will cough then lose power for a while then it will run ok?

Coughing through the carbs is a sign that there is not enough fuel at that time for the engine. 2 cycle engines can burn a piston if fuel is not enough adequate. I would recommend cleaning the carbs. If you need more help contact me through my board and I will try to help.
