Mountain lions, also known as cougars or pumas, are found across a diverse range of habitats in North America. They primarily inhabit the western regions of the continent, including the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada, and the coastal ranges of California. Their range extends from Canada down through the United States and into parts of Mexico, with populations in some areas of the Midwest and Florida as well. Mountain lions prefer areas with ample cover and prey, such as forests, mountains, and grasslands.
