Why would a male pheasant dig a hole and sit in it it is not under a hedge and is in quite an exposed area We have never seen them do this before and we get lots of them all year round.?

Pheasants dig for two reason:

1) to cool off

2) to dust themselves to rid themselves of unwanted insects. Why out in the open? It was probably an easier place to dig than in the hedgerow.
