Why did Larry page and sergey brin invent Google?

Larry and Page were PH.D. students at Stanford University specializing in Computer Science when they came up with the idea of google. At first google was merely a doctorate project, which has later become one of the world's biggest IT and, surprisingly, advertising companies.
