Why is it difficult to generalize about African art and culture?

If by using the term "African" in terms of defining literature, it by its very nature is difficult to place in a specific category or to accurately define it. This is because the continent of Africa is so diverse in its multitude of nations and its many religions. Religions are important because some of the African literature is radically based on the religion of various authors in various nations within Africa.
