What did the townsfolk do at the end of the story when they find out Ichabod was missing?

The townsfolk searched for Ichabod in the woods but only found his discarded hat next to a smashed pumpkin. They concluded that he had been spirited away by the Headless Horseman and was never seen in Sleepy Hollow again.
