Is it safe to buy a vintage car. I'm looking to buy a 1965-66 Mustang from a neighbor. Is there anything I need to be aware of before I purchase the car which would be my first car?

The early Mustangs were prone in critical areas to rust out. Have a trusted garage put it up on a lift to inspect the under carriage for serious rust damage and or the quality of rust repairs if any work was done.
