  • the Goji berry (also known as the Wolfberry) is the common name for 2 species of Boxthorn (Lycium Barbarum and Lycium Chinense).
  • While native to Southeastern Europe and Asia, it was introduced to the UK in the 1730s by the Duke of Argyll (leading to one of it's common names - Duke of Argyll's Tea Tree. It has been used for hedging which has led to it growing in the wild.
  • Goji berries are traditionally cooked before being eaten. Among other uses they have been used in soups, wines and beers.
  • Medicinally, it has been associated with being an Antioxidant, working against cardiovascular, inflammatory and vision related diseases and Cancer, and having neuroprotective properties, however the question over its effectiveness still remains.
  • The leaves have been taken as a tea as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, however this method of consumption has been associated with inhibiting warfarin metabalism and causing increased bleeding.
  • The berries are often used as supplements and contain many minerals, vitamins and amino acids, including Calcium, Iron, Vitamin C and Vitamin B2 among others
