Sansui mp3 doesn't show signs of charging when plugged in to the laptop what am I doing wrong?

If the Sansui MP3 player is not showing signs of charging when plugged into the laptop, perhaps the wrong cord is being used. There is a data cord and a charging cord. They look almost exactly the same. It is easier to charge this device by plugging it into a wall outlet, so that cords do not get mixed up.
