How do you power off an iPod nano?

All you have to do is hold down the play/pause button at the bottom of the click wheel until the screen goes black, and to keep it off, slide the lock switch to the opposite direction, so you should see orange.

But with the new iPod Nano as of September 2010, this is not what you do.
