In the book Five People You Meet in Heaven how was Eddie's father loyal to Mickey Shea?

He was loyal because even though Mickey tried to rape Eddie's mom, when they were in the ocean Eddie's father saved Mickey by dragging him out of the water. Eddie's father died of pneumonia due to that.
