Why is the picture of Dorian Gray the only published novel by Oscar Wilde?

The Picture of Dorian Gray first appeared in a magazine but was later published as a novel. Although he never published another novel he did produce several works of poetry. It is believed he would have succeeded in publishing more novels if not for his difficult life, including imprisonment and his untimely early death at forty-six.
