Who were the first people to sail a boat to America?

A group of Viking explorers under the leadership of Leif Ericson "the Lucky" landed in Newfoundland around 1000 A.D. They called the area "Vinland" and set up a colony that was eventually driven out by Native Americans. These were the first Europeans to discover America.
